Who can join?

This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn some tap and to add more rhythms to their vernacular jazz dancing. That means: you don’t need any previous tap experience, but you should know some solo jazz. If you haven’t done any solo jazz dance at all before, this workshop will be quite challenging. If you’re not sure, ask us and we can help you decide ([email protected]).

What will I learn?

This workshop will go over some basic elements of rhythm tap and soft shoe tap dancing. We will start with rhythm tap, which is a form of tap dance focusing on musicality and improvisation, not placing much importance on aesthetics (we don’t care how it looks, as long as it sounds amazing). Then we will turn to vernacular jazz and look at it from a tap dancer’s perspective, recognising the basic rhythmical elements already present in the dance we will add some additional percussive flavouring to it.

Do I need special shoes?

This is an opportunity to discover tap dance and to learn common rhythmic patterns, which will serve as a foundation for your rhythmical self-expression. Tap shoes are not required for the class. If you do have tap shoes, feel free to take them for the first part of the class, yet the second part will focus on soft shoe dancing where special shoes are not used, so bring your normal dancing shoes too.

A little more about Dag:

Dag trained in various dance styles before discovering the world of swing dance. He has danced ballet, modern jazz and contemporary. Then he discovered rhythm tap, which inspired him to study musicality and improvisation. All of these elements seemed to fit perfectly together when Dag discovered swing dance. Swing dancing has been an important part of his life ever since.
