Raising awareness of cultural appropriation and racial injustice within the swing dance community
Lindy Hop is an African American art-form borne of a culture of oppression and racism. Both the music and the dance were expressions of defiant reactions to the oppression and hardships that people were, and still are, fiacing. Our community owe its existence to this art form’s creators. This is why we we need to honour it, not only by learning the steps, moves and techniques. But also form a more profound understanding for its history and culture in order to contribute positively to its continued development and providing a safe environment for people of color to feel welcomed and appreciated within this community.
It is important to note that our team at SwingStep have a lot to learn about the issues addressed here and what to do about it. We are hope you join us in learning together.
