Beginner-Aufbau
Lindy Hop Workshop

Lindy Hop is superfun, and quite easy with a bit of practice. Even I can do it (more or less :D) – Leo

Saturday June 3rd

Have you danced a little Lindy Hop before, and want to start digging deeper? Then this workshop is perfect for you! You’ll have the chance to refresh some of the steps you’ve done before, and expand from there. You’ll get more moves, more technical skills, more ideas for how to express yourself to the music and have fun with your partner. Get more Lindy Hop in your life!

Dive into a wonderful world full of dance and culture. Lindy Hop has deep roots in Black American culture and comes with a lot of space for improvisation and creativity. It’s not about doing the exact same steps ever more perfectly, it’s about being yourself: sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, sometimes small, sometimes big, sometimes silly, sometimes elegant.

You won’t need a dance partner because when dancing and in class, we change partners often. This workshop will take that one step further: it’s ELEF (Everybody-Leads-Everybody-Follows).

The workshop gives us two and a half hours to explore the dance together. We’ll have a few breaks, in order to relax and mingle with each other. Later on, come join our beginners at the Practice Time to round off a great afternoon.

After the workshop, you’ve earned yourself a break, maybe a nice lunch nearby. Then, come back to the studio, and end the afternoon with a little time to practice and hang out together, where you can meet other dancers from our community. We’ll play music, dance, and enjoy a few hours together before going home with a big smile.

You’ll be in great hands in this workshop. Your teachers, Ali and Kris, have been teaching Lindy Hop for well over a decade and are known around the world for their clear and inspiring teaching. Here’s a video of them dancing: https://youtu.be/g6EyESWSlDI.

At SwingStep, we encourage everybody to see themselves as dancers rather than “leaders” or “followers”. ELEF gives everybody the opportunity to learn the dance from both leader and follower perspectives. This can help you decide which role you like best, and prepare you to be able to dance with anyone – so you’ll never have to wait for a partner.

We’ll start with awesome swing music, and simple movements to warm you up and give you an easy start. We’ll build from there, gradually mixing what you’ve learned before with new elements.

You’ll get clear guidance and support from our teachers. And, as always, you’ll be able to explore outside of the basic steps, play with ideas and create fun moments with your partner.

You should have a little experience with Lindy Hop in order to participate in this workshop. If you’ve taken one of our beginner workshops, or attended a few drop-in classes, you’ll have the foundation you need to build on and get the right amount of challenge for you.

If you’re completely new to Lindy Hop, we recommend our Beginner Workshop.

Here’s where the workshop will take place:

SwingStation Kurfürsten-Anlage 58
69115 Heidelberg

The entrance is on the eastern side of the building, reachable from the Kurfürsten-Anlage itself or from the Kirchstraße. Our studio is on the ground floor, at the end of the hall.

Public Transportation: many busses, streetcars, trains; stops “Hauptbahnhof” or “Stadtwerke”.

Parking: please do not park in the yard, the parking spaces don’t belong to us and you might get a ticket. It’s hard to find parking spots in our area, so you should plan in some extra time. You can try to find street parking in the Kirchstraße or Vangerowstraße, or you might need to go to a nearby Parkhaus (e.g. P1 in the Poststraße) and walk from there.
